IN THIS ISSUETHIS MONTH AT EMPIREIT’S THIRTY YEARS since Arnie inspired kids the world over to run around the schoolyard shouting, “Run! Get to da chaaaaapppaaaaahhhhhhh!” (Just us?) And in the intervening years we’ve had two further Predator films. Sadly, neither have quite captured, or recreated the magic, of the original. But, and we say this with cautious confidence, new movie The Predator might be the first to break the streak. Shane Black is at the helm and sprinkling his own specific brand of dark humour over fantastic action and full-bodied scares. Pretty much exactly what we want from a Predator movie. This issue, James Dyer heads on set and then pops round to Black’s house to get the full story. It turns out the director rediscovered the magic not just on screen but within himself...…1 min
IN THIS ISSUECOMMENT OF THE MONTHSPIT TAKEThere’s something that’s been bothering me since the day Jurassic Park opened. When Dennis Nedry didn’t say the magic word and got eaten by the dilophosaurus, both car doors are closed! Did the dinosaur spend the rest of her days stuck inside a Jeep with the carcass of poor old Mr Nedry? How long did she cry for help, and did she begin to repent her life choices? And don’t get me started on Mr Arnold’s dismembered hand...KASPERI KUNNAS, VIA EMAILPerhaps the people threatening to remake The Last Jedi should instead focus on creating a 127 Hours-style spin-off that answers these questions.Empire’s star letter wins a Picturehouse Membership, plus one for a friend! Valid for one year at 23 Picturehouse Cinemas across the UK, including the flagship Picturehouse Central…2 min

PRE.VIEW A darker shade of magicEMPIREDavid Heyman spoke to us on 25 June while overseeing Beasts post-production.THERE WAS ALWAYS a political edge to Harry Potter, even with all the dragons and broomsticks; Voldemort was nothing if not a fascist. However, the way producer David Heyman talks about The Crimes Of Grindelwald, the sequel to 2016’s Fantastic Beasts, makes it sound like we might be leaping into a political thriller.“It’s about the dangers of absolutism and fundamentalism,” says Heyman. “We see that in Grindelwald.” To recap, he was the dark wizard arrested at the end of the last film, revealed to be Johnny Depp in a Colin Farrell disguise. A year on, he’s on the brink of escaping prison and trying to unite the magically powered to crush the merely human. His means to achieving this,…2 min

PRE.VIEW Next WorldDON’T KNOCK IT OUT OF THE PARKWith Dolores, Bernard and whatever consciousness currently inhabits Tessa Thompson now in the real world, we could conceivably move away from one of the other stars of Westworld: the park itself. With a less fantastic canvas to paint on, it would be easy fall back to a more generic, ‘us versus them’ story in Season 3, and the show would be all the poorer for it. Standout episodes like ‘Akane No Mai’ showed just how much scope there is for compelling, tangential narratives within other artificial worlds. Shogun World, like Westworld, was a stunning microcosm of our history; while Raj World worked less well, we’ve been told there are six parks in total, with three as-yet unrevealed. Delos’ master plan for the parks may…2 min
