If there's one element that never fails to make fantasy stories like Netflix's Damsel more exciting, it's dragons. These intimidating creatures are guaranteed to increase the tension with their majestic wings and their ability to breathe fire. Netflix tapped into the subgenre with Millie Bobby Brown's Damsel, where the talented actress plays Princess Elodie, a young woman forced to fight off a dragon she was offered up to as a sacrifice.
While Elodie's journey is more action-laced, there are many dragon tales filled with romance, drama, and horror. Regardless of the true focus of these fantasy stories, they tend to orbit around the imposing figure of the dragon. The fantasy genre's versatility often leads to all sorts of stories set in unique worlds. Netflix's Damsel left burning questions answered, and with that in mind, viewers might find themselves craving more exciting dragon stories.

Dragonlance: Dragons of Autumn Twilight was the first book of The Dragonlance Chronicles, a trilogy of books published by TSR, the company that published Dungeons & Dragons until 1997. In 2008, Dragonlance: Dragons of Autumn Twilight was faithfully adapted as an animated movie. It picks up when Tanis Half-Elven (Michael Rosenbaum), Sturm Brightblade (Marc Worden), Caramon Majere (Rino Romano), Raistlin Majere (Keifer Sutherland), Flint Fireforge (Fred Tatasciore), and Tasslehoff Burrfoot (Jason Marsden) reunite in their hometown of Solace after a five-year absence. But they discover that all is not well as hobgoblins patrol the streets and a religious group called the Seekers prepares the way for dragons to come back to the world of Krynn.

24 I Am Dragon Features Dragons And Romance
Damsel Has Shades Of This Film In It
I Am Dragon is a Russian film that was released in December 2015 and, at the international box office, it was the highest grossing Russian film in 2016. Damsel has more than a few shades of I Am Dragon in it. The Russian film opens with a backstory of a dragon who terrorizes a village in its distant past, so the villagers sacrifice young maidens to it until a knight defeats it and becomes known as the Dragon Slayer.
Years later, Princess Miraslava is preparing for her marriage to Igor, the grandson of the Dragon Slayer. As his people sing their ancient song, they inadvertently call forth a dragon that is still alive. The dragon comes to the song and takes Mira captive to its island. Later Mira meets a young man who she calls Arman because he can't remember his name. She soon discovers that he is the dragon in human form. I Am Dragon traces their love story through the dangers of his inner beast and the courage of Mira.

It Follows Jennifer Strange, an Orphan
The Last Dragon Slayer is based on the 2010 young adult novel by Jasper Fforde and focuses on Jennifer Strange, a plucky, quick-witted foundling (orphan) who lives in a world of magic, but the magic is weakening. In this quirky world, she works for the wizard Zambini who runs an employment house for other wizards. This is an amusing and fun-filled movie that pulls viewers into this fantasy world even as it pokes fun at common tropes.

Director and writer Laurie Brewster and Sarah Daly, respectively stepped out of their horror wheelhouse to make this film on a less-than-epic budget of $100,000, and while the film has some haters, there are those who appreciate it for what it is.
Dragon Knight concerns the demon lord Abaddon whose evil army attacked the Five Kingdoms two hundred years ago. Led by the Dragon Knights and their Dragons, the kingdoms fought back, but the demon hoardes were not fully defeated. Cut to the present when Braedyn, the Last Dragon Knight, tries unsuccessfully to raise an army to put down Abaddon once and for all. All seems pretty hopeless until Braedyn discovers that there may be one dragon left who can help turn the tide.

21 Raya And the Last Dragon Is a Modern Disney Epic
It Follows Raya Who Tries To Find the Last Dragon
Raya and the Last Dragon is one of the best fantasy movies since 2020 as well as one of the best Disney animated features in recent years. Full of color, action, great characters, and some simple Disney world-building, Raya follows the titular character on her quest to find the last dragon. In an effort to strive for unity among the five Chiefdoms, Heart, Fang, Talon, Spine, and Tail, Raya's father, Benja, Chief of Heart, invites them all to his land.
But a power struggle emerges when the Chiefdoms fight for the gem, which is the last surviving source of power of the long-lost dragons, and destroy it. Its destruction releases the ancient evil, the Drunns, who begin to attack the Chiefdoms. In the struggle, Benja sacrifices himself to save his daughter. Raya then goes on a quest to find the last dragon and vanquish the Drunn. This movie is full of adventure and heart and shouldn't be missed.

Humans Transform Into Dragons In The World of Narnia
Ahead of Greta Gerwig's Narnia reboot for Netflix, dragon fans should revisit the last installment of the original film trilogy, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. Based on the fifth book in C.S. Lewis's iconic fantasy series, the film follows Lucy and Edmund Pevensie on yet another adventure in the world of Narnia. This time, they are joined by their irritable cousin, Eustace Clarence Scrubb, who doesn't take to the fantasy world as kindly as they did on their first adventure.
Along the way, Eustace's greed gets the better of him when he discovers hordes of gold on a mysterious island. Unaware that the gold is cursed, Eustace steals some of it for himself, only to discover that it has transformed him into a terrible dragon. Eustance continues for the rest of the journey as a dragon until he is finally healed by Aslan the lion. The Voyage of the Dawn Treader provides a very different depiction of dragons than viewers may be used to, but it is also fresh and inventive, especially compared to the mindless roaring beasts that so often are shown in pop culture.

It proved to be a divisive fantasy movie at the time of its release, but at least it introduced interesting concepts surrounding dragon lore and a star-studded cast: Ben Barnes, Jeff Bridges, Julianne Moore, and Alicia Vikander. In the film, Tom Ward — the seventh son of a seventh son — sets out to become a spook's apprentice, entering the dangerous world of a witch hunter. He unites forces with his master to defeat Mother Malkin, the queen of evil witches, against whom Tom's master holds a personal grudge.

For one thing, Tom's hero's journey follows a similar direction as that of Damsel's Elodie. However, with limited special effects and a premise that heavily deviates from the creative source material (the horror-fantasy book series The Spook's Apprentice), Seventh Son relies heavily on the strength of its cast and a captivating climax between the forces of good and evil. Seventh Son doesn't skimp on resources to show how formidable Mother Malkin's abilities are; the movie's biggest highlight is when two evil witches transform into dragons and fight against each other, putting all the other characters in danger as the risks increase drastically.

Sam Neill Encounters Another Giant Lizard in This Fantasy Film
Sam Neill is famous for his role as Dr. Grant in the Jurassic Park movies. But in 1998, he offered up a two-part miniseries with Merlin, where he remixed the titular wizard's story. His Merlin had to figure out a way to overcome the evil Fairy Queen Mab, protect his beloved Nimue, and save the realm. It tied in Excalibur, as well as dragons.
Mab wanted to sacrifice Nimue to the latter to draw out Merlin's magic, manipulate his destiny, and make him her weapon. This played on the Pendragon lore, allowing Merlin to choose his own fate as he tutored Arthur and helped create the Knights of the Round Table. In this case, as poor as the CGI was, the dragon helped Merlin realize what power meant in an emotional story about justice, equality, and leadership.

This Mostly Forgotten Fantasy Film Focuses On the Dragons
2006's Eragon sees Ed Speleers as the titular character, a farm boy who comes across a dragon egg. Once it hatches, Eragon bonds with the dragon inside, Saphira. Together, they share a supernatural connection, making Eragon a sorcerer as much as he was a swordsman. Thankfully, he has a former dragon rider, Brom, as a mentor to learn from.
Saphie is a dragon as sweet as deadly — someone you definitely want on your side. Eragon and Saphira eventually ally with the rebels (including princess elf Arya) to take down the evil king, Galbatorix, and his minions. This film, while flawed, carves out a fun family ride filled with love and politics.

Smaug Finally Appears In All His Glory
The Hobbit was split into three films: An Unexpected Journey (2012), The Desolation of Smaug (2013), and The Battle of the Five Armies (2014). The trilogy focuses on Bilbo Baggins working as a burglar with a crew of Dwarves and Gandalf. He's meant to infiltrate the Lonely Mountain to help the dwarves reclaim their treasure. What follows is a tale of comedy, tragedy, and tests of loyalty as Benedict Cumberbatch's Smaug begins marking the fellowship as food.
The second film is where Smaug steals the show, emerging from the shadows as he tries to make the party his prey. Smaug is an aristocratic dragon, coming off as very condescending and filled with a tremendous personality. The CGI is extremely well-done, creating an enthralling battle in the opening act of the third movie to seal Smaug's final fate.

6 Dragonslayer Was a Delightful Dragon Story About Underdogs
Humans Fight Dragons In This Epic Fantasy Film
1981's Dragonslayer revolves around a young wizard, Galen, taking up the mantle from Ulrich. His job is to harness the power of a magical amulet and defeat a sinister dragon terrorizing the kingdom, Vermithrax. Like the dragon in Damsel, this one required young women to be fed to it.
Galen, however, wants to ensure his crush, Valerian, and no other lady would suffer this fate. It's a straightforward mystical romp that plays into many tropes from the 1980s. However, it has tons of heart, soul, and romance, creating an innocent story about an underdog mage who just wants peace in his realm. Dragonslayer has a campy yet alluring vibe with its practical effects, and it might have flopped at the box office but lived on to become a cult favorite.
